John Robert Baker

March 12, 1938 - July 6, 2012

John R. Baker, 74, of Litchfield, passed away Friday (07/06/2012) at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Born March 12, 1938, in Hillsdale, he was the son of Gordon and Mildred (Wood) Baker and she survives. He graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1956 and served 13 years in the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era. He had been employed by Howard Houchen and Ryan & Bradshaw as a master plumber and taught scuba diving at Hillsdale College for 15 years.

He was a member of Hanover Horton American Legion No. 270, Hillsdale Moose Lodge No. 921, and Hillsdale Elks Lodge No. 1575. He was also a member of the NRA, Veterans Association, the Hillsdale County Sheriff Dept. Rescue and Recovery Team, Hillsdale Rotary and Lions Clubs, and BFF Club. He enjoyed golfing, cooking, target shooting, scuba diving and mowing the lawn.

On September 1, 1956, he married Mary (Wilson) Baker and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Deborah (Robert) Wagner of Belding and Susan Robilliard of Albion; one son, Gregory (Sarah) Baker of Grapevine, TX; one sister, Linda (Keith) Blonde of Litcfield; three brothers, Jim Baker of Frisco, TX, Richard (Nona) Rogers of New Orleans, LA, and Roger (Julie) Rogers of NC; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother (Gordon Baker), and one son-in-law (John Robilliard).

A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM, Tuesday at the Litchfield United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Harkey officiating. Visitation is scheduled Tuesday from 11:00 AM until time of service. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
