Virginia Townsend Scholl
May 28, 1929 - September 4, 2012
Virginia Townsend Scholl, 83, died Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at her home in Hillsdale, Michigan, surrounded by her loving family. Ginny was born May 28, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio to Robert & Esther Hinsey. She spoke fondly of hours of creative play in the fields near home and on her uncle's farm with her siblings, Joan and Rob. Kick-the-can, hopscotch, jump rope, biking and skating were all popular then without television or computers. Summer mornings of "cowboys and indians" were often followed by rest periods of playing Monopoly- an idyllic childhood. Ginny attended Whittier Grade School and DeVilbiss High School. She earned her Bachelor's in 1951 and Master's in 1972 in Education at the University of Toledo which led to a satisfying career in teaching and high school counseling.
Ginny had happy memories of a blessed life. She lived in seven different states and traveled world wide which provided rich experiences - an extra bonus in living. Life in Hillsdale, Michigan, on a peaceful lake brought enormous contentment in retirement after raising three accomplished children and sharing life with two loving husbands. With Robert W. Townsend, there were 40 years of raising and educating their children Jeffrey, Barbara and Matthew. After Bob's death in 1991, Ginny was fortunate to meet and marry Robert Scholl with whom she shared over 19 year in retirement and travel.
Involvement in her community and in interest groups was an intergral part of Ginny's life. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hillsdale, a member and past president of the Hillsdale Women's Club and an active participant in the Hillsdale Garden Club, Hillsdale Country Club, AAUW, Book Club of Toledo and Hillsdale Book groups.
Ginny is survived by her husband, Robert Scholl of Hillsdale; children, Jeffrey (Lori) Townsend, Barb (Steve) Donovan and Matthew (Nadine) Townsend; step-children, James (Karen) Scholl, Scott (Erna) Scholl and Ron (Jane) Scholl; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn her loss are her older sister, Joan Hinsey Bock of Perrysburg, Ohio and younger brother Rob Hinsey and sister-in-law, Ruth of Orlando, Florida.
Preceding Ginny in death were her parents Robert & Esther Hinsey, her husband Robert W. Townsend, brother-in-law Warren Bock, niece Ann Prue and cousin Ray Hinsey.
A celebration of Ginny's life will be held Saturday, September 8, 2012, art 11:00
a.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Manning St, Hillsdale. A reception will be held immediately following at the church social hall. The family will receive friends for visitation Friday from 6-8 p.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home.
As anyone who knew Ginny can attest, she was a proud patriot and an ardent supporter of the freedom and liberties espoused in our U.S. Constitution. To those wishing to contribute in her memory, she would be honored with donations to: The Leadership Institute, 1101 N. Highland St., Arlington, VA 22201; The Allan P. Kirby Center for Constitutional Studies, Hillsdale College, 227 Massachusetts Ave NE, Washington, D.C. 20002. The family is also grateful to Hospice of Hillsdale County for their care and support. Donations may also be sent to Hospice at 124 S. Howell St., Hillsdale, MI 49242.
