Richard Douglas Smith

Richard Douglas Smith, 64, of Hudson, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 29, 2017, at his home. He was born September 15, 1952, in Richlands, VA, to the late Charlie and Helen (Wells) Smith. He married Celeste Bloomer on November 4, 1989, in Adrian. She survives.
A graduate of Carmen High School in Flint, MI, Richard was a longtime employee of General Motors and active member of the UAW Local 2031 in Adrian, where he served as president of its retirees. Catholic by faith, Richard attended the parishes of St. Joseph Shrine in the Irish Hills and most recently Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson. He was also member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Irish Hills Council 6223. In his spare time, Richard enjoyed woodworking and playing cards with family and friends.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 27 years, Celeste, are his six children, Steven (Raylene) Merillat of Clayton, Brian (Jenny) Smith of Jackson, Crystal Merillat of Hudson, Lesley (Greg) Brighton of KS, Amber (Charles) Bittinger of Onsted, and Desiree Eaton of Hudson; siblings, Danny (Sylvia) Smith of Durand, MI, Randy (Sue) Smith of Durand, Ruby Smith of Durand, and Claude (Leslie) Smith of Sand Creek; 14 grandchildren, Taylor Merillat, Jessica, Jacob and Jenna Smith, Zachary, Chase and Cooper Edmonson, Tiana (Dakota) Ewert, Trinity, Autumn and Annah Brighton, Kane and Grace Wright, and Lillian Bittinger; and a great-granddaughter, Amelia Ewert; and his faithful “couch buddy” canine companion, Leo.
Preceding Richard in death in addition to his parents, were two brothers, Dewey and Clayton Smith.
A funeral mass for the soul of Richard will be celebrated on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Joseph Krupp serving as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Hudson. The family will receive friends for a visitation at the Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson on Wednesday afternoon from 2-8 p.m., with a vigil prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions in honor of Richard can be directed to Hudson Carnegie District Library or Sacred Heart School.
