Vernon J. Harper

Vernon J. Harper, 90, of Tecumseh, died Wednesday evening, May 3, 2017, at the Hospice of Lenawee Home in Adrian, following a short period of declining health. Born March 12, 1927, in Morenci, he was the son of the late Francis Earl and Bessie (Abeling) Harper. He married Betty Beem on December 2, 1946, in Paris, France, and she preceded him in death in 1994.
Vern, a veteran of the US Army, honorably served our country overseas during World War II. Before his retirement, Vern had been employed with the former M&S Manufacturing for 42 years. He was a member of the Morenci American Legion Post 368 and the Adrian Street Cruisers. Vern had a passion for old cars. He is remembered for his love of socializing, and enjoyed the pastimes of camping, playing cards, and drinking coffee with family and friends. He had a talent for woodworking and was a skilled bowler, once inducted into the Morenci Bowling Hall of Fame.
Surviving to mourn his loss are a son, Francis (Deborah) Harper of Villages, FL; daughter, Sandra (Eric) Emmons of Morenci; sister, Betty Rector of Adrian; longtime beloved companion, Connie Vinton of Tecumseh; daughter-in-law, Marti Harper; seven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Vern was preceded in death by a son Vernon James Harper Jr.; a brother, William Price; and a sister, Elizabeth Smith.
In accordance with Vern’s wishes, cremation will take place. A memorial service for Vernon will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci with Pastor Jon Ruse officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Canandaigua Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a visitation for one hour preceding the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
