Shirley A. Gerig
March 23, 1932 - July 27, 2017
Shirley A. Gerig, 85, lifelong resident of Hudson, died Thursday, July 27, 2017, at the Hospice of Lenawee Home in Adrian. Born March 23, 1932, in Hudson, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Diana (Foster) Galbreath. A 1950 graduate of Hudson High School, she married Richard L. Gerig later that year on June 19. He recently preceded her in death on April 14, 2017.
Shirley was formerly a member of both the Lincoln Mother’s Club and Hudson Fire Department False Alarms. She is remembered for her green thumb, and she took great pride in planting and harvesting a garden and tending to her flower beds each year. She also enjoyed playing Bingo, and had a talent for cake decorating. Her heart was most full when she was spending time with her beloved family, especially her grandchildren whom she adored.
Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Cooley and Julie (Ron) Keene, both of Hudson; four sons, Dennis (Vicki) Gerig, Steve Gerig, Brian Gerig and Kim (Melanie) Gerig all of Hudson; two sisters, Marilyn (Charles) Major of Adrian and Audrey Boyer of Hudson; three brothers, Douglas (Susan) Galbreath, Don Galbreath, and Robert (Chris) Galbreath all of Hudson; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Galbreath of Battle Creek; lifelong friend, Sally McNight of Hillsdale; fifteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband of 66 years, Richard, she was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Galbreath, and a daughter in-law, Nancy Gerig.
A funeral service will be held Monday, July 31, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson with Rev. Douglas Plunkett officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson. Friends are welcome to pay their respects to the Gerig family at the Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson on Sunday afternoon, from 4-7 p.m.
Memorial contributions in honor of Shirley can be designated to Hospice of Lenawee.
