Nancy M. White
April 12, 1938 - September 23, 2017
We mourn with great sadness the passing of Nancy Margaret White, 79, on September 23, 2017 in Washington , D.C. She was surrounded by her family in her final days and hours. She was preceded in death by her loving husband & partner, Daryl Lee White; loving mother of Karen (Rob Johnson) and Douglas (Kyung), and grandmother of McCall, Quinn, Catherine, Andrew and Justin; loving sister of Barbara Symanski and John Bancroft.
Born in Detroit, as a young woman Nancy was active in her church and her school, as well as being known as an athlete. Nancy graduated from Morenci High School (she loved the great class of 1956!), and went on to Michigan State University (Go Green!) and then to get her Masters in Counseling and Guidance in 1971 from Wayne State University.
She met Daryl in Morenci, they were married in 1962, then moved to Royal Oak in 1966. Nancy moved to Fraser in 1972, where she taught school, volunteered for countless organizations, and raised her family. Nancy taught in the Fraser Public Schools from 1962-1985. She worked for MEA-Local One representing and advocating for educators for over a decade. Nancy served as Chair of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners, after representing her district for over 4 years on the county commission. One of Nancy’s greatest accomplishments was electing David Bonior to the US House of Representatives in 1976, where she served as his campaign manager.
Nancy dedicated her career and life to helping others, as demonstrated by her activism on so many community organizations – Chair, Mental Health Board of Macomb County, United Way Community Service Director, Creating a Healthier Macomb. Her community was so important to Nancy!
As important as her work and service was, Nancy’s family was her greatest love. Becoming a grandmother and being able to watch the kids grow up was her true love – watching baseball, basketball and lacrosse games, as well as dance recitals, golf matches and acro tournaments was a great joy to Nancy. Nancy loved her chocolate, and her grandkids are happy to carry on that tradition!
May she rest in Peace with our Love.
Memorial services for Nancy will be Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci with Rev. William VanValkenburg officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci.
