Robert Hayes III
August 1, 1928 - December 31, 2017
Robert Hayes III, age 89, of Hillsdale, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Drews Place Village Green Assisted Living in Hillsdale. He was born August 1, 1928 in Sycamore, Illinois to Robert and Marie (Atkinson) Hayes II. Bob married Mary Jane Clark on April 11, 1955 and she survives.
Bob graduated from Central High School in Bay City in 1947 and he received his BS from Central Michigan University in 1951. He served his county in the United States Army Medical Service Corps in Korea from 1951-1953. Bob later received his MA from Eastern Michigan University in 1957. From 1953-1987, Bob worked as a speech and language pathologist for the Hillsdale Intermediate School District, where he was instrumental in getting the first special education millage passed in Hillsdale County. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony Men's Club and St. Anthony Cemetery Board. Bob belonged to the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association from 1969-1989; Michigan Speech and Hearing Association; MEA; NEA; Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel; Council for Exceptional Children and Who's Who in Education from 1967-1968. He was also a member of the North American Short Wave Association, Michigan Genealogical Society, Hillsdale County Genealogical Society and Hillsdale Community Health Center Auxiliary.
In addition to his wife, Mary Jane Hayes, Bob is survived by four children, Steven (Kandy) Hayes of Hillsdale, Jane (David) Miller of Clermont, Florida, Kathleen (David) Culp of Niles and Mark Hayes of Battle Creek; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Susan (Frank) Valencic and daughter-in-law, Christi Hayes.
Mass of Christian Burial for Bob Hayes will be Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 12:00 PM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale with Fr. David Reamsnyder officiating. Interment will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday from 6-8 PM with a scripture service beginning at 7:30 PM at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
