Dr. Charles "Chuck" Johnson

Dr. Charles R. "Chuck" Johnson, 86, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, January 22, 2018 at the MacRitchie Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. He was born May 19, 1931 in Gary, Indiana to George and Esther (Strong) Johnson. Chuck married Madelyn Holtz on September 5, 1952 and she survives.
Chuck graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1950 and from Wheaton College in 1954. He received his Masters of Divinity from Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana in 1964 and his Doctorate in Marriage and Family from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in1984. He was a licensed social worker. Chuck was co-pastor, with his wife Madelyn, of College Baptist Church in Hillsdale from 1986 to 1996. He was employed at Hillsdale College from 1988 until his death as a Lecturer of Sociology and counselor to students, faculty and staff. He co-taught a class in marriage and family at the college with his wife Madelyn and together they founded Storm's Eye Ministries, a counseling support for troubled clergy.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, Dr. Madelyn Johnson, Chuck is survived by two daughters, Charlyn (Roger) Edwards of Clinton, Washington and Nanette (Patrick Hill) Johnson of Asheville, North Carolina, a daughter-in-law, Karen Johnson of Cincinnati, Ohio, a sister, Ruth (Paul) Bauhahn of Fridley, Minnesota and two grandchildren, Matthew Petrie of Berkeley, California and Kelsey Johnson of Lawrence, Kansas.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents and by his son, Steven Johnson in 2004.
Memorial services for Dr. Charles "Chuck" Johnson will be held Monday, February 26, 2018 at 11:00 AM at College Baptist Church in Hillsdale with Rev. Ben Cuthbert officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation Sunday from 3:30-5:00 PM, at the church. Private family interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale. Arrangements are entrusted to VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
