Kenneth "Skip" Burkley Boyd
August 19, 1927 - April 10, 2018
Kenneth “Skip” Burkley Boyd, 90, a lifetime Reading resident, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born August 19, 1927 in Reading to John and Ettie (Burkley) Boyd. Kenneth married Donna (Burger) Ritter on October 6, 1990 and she survives.
He was faithfully involved at Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsdale and the North Reading Baptist Church. Skip worked as a mechanic at the Hillsdale Power Plant, in addition to farming his land. He also drove semi intermittently for Watkins Oil and after his retirement from the power plant, he was a distributor for Fielder's Choice Seed Corn. Skip was very inventive, a “Renaissance man” and loved to work. He liked to travel and went salmon fishing in the fall up north at Tippy Dam for many years and occasional fishing and boating at their Matteson Lake place. He loved to fix and restore things, including his 1971 Volkswagen, tractors and other farm equipment. He also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, airplanes, country music, NASCAR racing, and his grandchildren, and ice cream.
In addition to his wife, Donna, Skip is survived by two daughters, Karen (Scott) Dietrich of Reading and Sue (Garrett Polakoski) Baker of Waukesha, Wisconsin; son, Kenneth Bradley (Diana) of Jackson; three step daughters, Laura Ritter of Holmes Beach, Florida, Karen (Dale) Cascaddan of Bradenton, Florida and Kathy (Jim) Fitch of Hillsdale; stepson, R.D. Ritter of Union City; 24 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; a special nephew, Stephen Boyd and childhood buddy, Jim Eckert.
Skip was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Harold, Lawrence, Thermon, Raymond, Donald and Duane; two sisters, Helen Warner and Evelyn Price; first wife, Ellen Price; stepson, J.R. Ritter; grandson, Ryan Baker; great grandson, Alex Gary and step great-great grandson, Brody Girdham.
Funeral services for Kenneth “Skip” Boyd will be Friday, April 13, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Reading with Pastor Samuel Nutter officiating. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday from 5-7 PM at the funeral home.
