Ethel L. Fullerton Ferguson

April 2, 1918 - May 5, 2018

Ethel Louis Ferguson of Hillsdale, Michigan, died on Saturday May 5, 2018 at the ripe young age of 100. Known affectionately to her friends as "Peg," she was one of 11 children born to Leslie and Estella Donihue on April 2, 1918.

After graduating from Hillsdale High School in 1936, Ethel worked as a waitress at the Keefer Hotel. She married Robert D. Fullerton on March 31, 1940, and together they raised three children; Janann, John and Mary. Both Robert and Janann preceded Ethel in death as well as a beloved granddaughter, Lisa. While on vacation in Florida, Ethel met Dallas Ferguson, whom she married on March 23, 1988. Until his death in 1995, Dallas and Ethel split their time between their homes in Michigan, Ohio and Florida.

Of Ethel's siblings who reached adulthood, three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. Still surviving are one brother, Lee Donihue of Hillsdale; two sisters, Elizabeth Null of Fairburn, Georgia and Barbara Hathaway of Phoenix, Arizona. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Gerry and Gregg Carpenter of Kalamazoo and Marc Shirley of Georgia; seven great-grandchildren, Kimberly, Nicholas and Kanaui Carpenter of Kalamazoo and Griffin, Hunter, Madison and Harper Lynn of Georgia; and three great-great-grandchildren Jazmin, Justin and Jayden Carpenter of Michigan.

After her retirement from the J.C. Penney Company, Ethel remained an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Hillsdale. As a former 4-H member herself, Ethel also served as a leader in the organization and was involved with the food service group that prepares meals during the Hillsdale County Fair. Ethel's passions in life included quilting, sewing, cooking, baking pies, canning and sharing her many talents with others.

Memorial services for Ethel Ferguson will be Friday, May 11, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Hillsdale with Rev. Pat Brook officiating. Interment will take place at Osborne Cemetery in Amboy Township at a later date. The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
