James Owen "Jim" Marks

James Owen "Jim" Marks, 71, of Jonesville, passed away at his home on Monday, May 14, 2018. He was born September 25, 1946 in Watervliet, MI to Robert and Isabelle (Portschy) Marks. Jim married Beverly (Bell) Goldsmith on January 30, 1999 and she survives.
Jim graduated from Lawrence High School in Michigan. He went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from Western Michigan University and his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Toledo. Jim began his law career in the Jackson Prosecutor's Office. He then moved to Jonesville and became partner at the private practice of Strauss & Marks Law Firm. Over the years, Jim partnered with fellow attorneys Mike Smith and Sara Lisznyai, who are currently serving as Circuit Court and District Court Judges in Hillsdale County. Jim officially retired from Marks & Lisznyai in 2008.
Jim volunteered his legal counsel to several local institutions, including the Perennial Park Senior Center and Jonesville District Library. He was an avid wine enthusiast. He and his wife, Bev, along with others, started Peerless Wine Selections in 2001 and together would travel to France and purchase French wine to be imported back to the United States. Jim loved gardening, cooking, good wine, bird watching, reading and all types of music. He served his country in the US Navy during the Vietnam Era.
Surviving besides his wife Bev, are two children, Jessica Marks of Toronto and Marissa Marks of Jackson; step-children, David (Mary) Grant of Los Angeles, CA, Robert Grant of Bay City, Jeff (Tao) Goldsmith of Jackson, MS, Kathy (Craig) Connor of Hillsdale and Amy (David Jones) Goldsmith of Hillsdale; grandchildren, Cade, Maisie, Amelia, Jaimes, Bonnie (Davis) Campbell and Ryan Connor; and siblings, Bob (Jane) Marks of Kalamazoo and Linda (Richard) Shepard of Louisville, KY; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; step-son, Mark Grant; and siblings, Joyce Gardner, Marge Helms, Rudolph Simon and Richard Simon.
Memorial services for James Marks are being planned for a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Hillsdale Hospital, Perennial Park Senior Center or a charity of the donor's choice.
